Fireside Family Restaurant is a Welland staple that was closed for a while and is now open again, so Robyn and I stopped in on the Gold Medal Burger quest. We brought a special guest, Zack Spinoza of Forge Fitness in Welland. The result: a naked burger and a disqualification. Fireside goes down as a DQ.

My order

I ordered two Gold Medal Burgers, a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. They were six bucks each, with both coming to $13.55, or $6.78 per burger. That is cheap, and the packaging was good too: an environmentally friendly container. I also have to give a shout-out to Krista, who works at Fireside and has been a great supporter.

Opening the container

Then the lid came off. No lettuce, no onion, no pickle. A bare naked burger. Whoever took the order wrote it up as a plain burger, and that's what came out. I called it a DQ on the spot, and Zack and I were both heartbroken because we had been looking forward to this one.

An unofficial bite

Zack and I still tried it, just to see. Here's what we found:

  • Bun: Pretty good.
  • Patty: Thick and warm, but dry and overcooked. I'm sure it was brought in frozen.
  • Seasoning: Not much, though a naked burger doesn't help.
  • Value: At $6.78, one of the cheapest burgers of the quest.

Off the record, I'd put the plain burger around a 6.1. It doesn't count, and there is no official score.

Enter the DQ redemption

Here's the twist. Fireside is so close to my heart that this DQ sparked something new: a DQ redemption. I'm coming back for a surprise revisit to give Fireside another shot. I don't know when, but I promise it's going to happen. Zack and I also started our health journey a few weeks earlier, so I joked that maybe a burger with no toppings fit the plan.

My verdict

Fireside in Welland is a DQ for now. The lesson I took from it: sometimes when you're looking for something and you don't get exactly what you want, you don't get it at all. Fireside will be back on the quest. Redemption is coming.
