Robyn and I have driven past Rolly's Smokehouse in Smithville so many times on the way to Toronto, always saying we should stop. This time we did. It was the quest's first ever stop in Smithville, and Rolly's Smokehouse on West Street scores a 6.3, good for #103 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, as always. The Gold Medal Burger came to $11.29, which is a pretty decent price. I liked the tight packaging too, with no wasted space in the container.

A first look

The bun had a dusting on top, which I was happy to see. Underneath were vertically sliced pickles, white onion and a whole lot of lettuce. My first guess was a pre-made backyard patty, but the staff told me it was homemade. Once I got into it, I believed them. I don't think she was lying.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and my first reaction was "not so bad." The homemade patty was good and reminded me a little of the burger at the Spot in Port Colborne, maybe a similar mix, though not quite at that level. With all that lettuce, this is a salad burger. You get all your greens here.

  • Bun: A dusted bun that held everything together nicely.
  • Patty: Homemade and solid. Not a wow, but good.
  • Seasoning: You can taste the salt. Not under seasoned, not over seasoned, though it could maybe use a touch more.
  • Toppings: Heavy on the lettuce, with vertical pickles and white onion.
  • Value: A homemade burger for a fair price.

Worth the stop?

Here's how I'd put it. If you're driving to Toronto and you're starving, you stop at Rolly's. If you're just a little hungry, it's not a burger you have to pull over for. It's a good homemade burger, just not a showstopper.

My verdict

A 6.3 for Rolly's Smokehouse. I'd certainly eat this burger again: well seasoned, fairly priced and made in house, with enough lettuce to count as a side salad. The quest continues.
