Everybody told me I had to go to The WORKS, so early in my Gold Medal Burger quest I headed to the Niagara Falls location near the top of Lundy's Lane. My expectations were high. The burger came in at a 7.6, #66 out of 140 burgers on my rankings, and a mix-up with the order played a part in that number.

My order

The WORKS has around a hundred burger styles and about ten different kinds of patties, but I skipped all of it and went with the standard beef patty, lettuce, onion and pickle only. It cost $14.55, plus five bucks to park. These burger reviews are starting to add up.

Before I even saw the burger, there was a problem. Ketchup, mustard and relish had been packed into the bag. I ordered lettuce, onion and pickle only, and on this quest condiments are for the birds. I took a mark off right then and there.

First bite

The packaging was efficient with no wasted space, and the burger looked good: a toasted bun, lots of lettuce, red onions and a bunch of pickles. One bite, everybody knows the rules. I could taste the grill on it, and the burger was juicy with good meat flavour. Nice pieces of red onion too. It was good, but it was not the best.

A second opinion

A gentleman nearby who'd eaten at The WORKS before gave me his take with a round number, no decimal. Rookie score. I wasn't swayed. I had it in the sevens, maybe flirting with an eight if not for the condiment mix-up.

How it rates

  • Bun: Toasted and good looking.
  • Patty: Juicy with a nice grilled flavour.
  • Toppings: Plenty of lettuce, good red onion and a lot of pickles.
  • Order accuracy: Ketchup, mustard and relish in the bag, which cost a mark.
  • Value: $14.55 plus parking, on the pricey side.

My verdict

Robyn shook her head at the deduction, but I stuck to it: I ordered a burger and they didn't get the order right. The WORKS lands at 7.6. It's a good burger, and I might come back to try some of the other patties, but this time the score is in the bag.
