M&J's Family Restaurant Burger Review – Fort Erie, ON
I had never had a burger in Fort Erie before this stop. M&J's Family Restaurant made a strong first impression. It scores an 8.2, good for #37 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings, and at $4.53 it's one of the cheapest burgers on the quest.
A different camera operator
Robyn wasn't behind the camera for this one. My buddy Mike Annunziata filled in. I went to high school with Mike and with George from M&J's, but that doesn't change anything. If my own lovely wife opened a burger shack and put out a bad burger, she'd get a bad review. M&J's was getting a fair one.
My order
The Gold Medal Burger: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. I could tell before the first bite that it was juicy. It was already dripping on me, and that's a good sign. On a sesame seed bun I found lettuce, bits of onion and what looked like sweet pickles, the way I like them.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. This was not a dry burger. No ketchup needed, and no reaching for water. It was dripping everywhere. Fort Erie isn't just cheap beer and good chicken wings. They make juicy burgers too.
I liked the amount of pickle, the lettuce had a nice crunch and the burger stayed juicy all the way through. It was better than most of the burgers I'd had on the quest so far, and I could tell it was heading into the territory of the eights.
The breakdown
- Bun: Sesame seed.
- Patty: Juicy and dripping. No condiments needed.
- Toppings: Sweet pickles in a good amount, crunchy lettuce and onion.
- Value: Excellent at $4.53.
My verdict
If this is what Fort Erie has to offer, I'll be there a lot more often. M&J's earns an 8.2, a very good burger that I'd come back for any time. Mike has been coming here a long time, and after this burger I understand why. For under five dollars, it's hard to find a better deal anywhere in Niagara, let alone one this juicy.
