Mick & Angelo's Kitchen + Bar on Lundy's Lane, right at the corner of Montrose in Niagara Falls, is one of my favourite Must See Monday stops. That counts for nothing on the Gold Medal Burger quest. Everybody starts at zero when I walk in, friends included. This burger earned its way to an 8.2, good for #44 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

I'll admit it, I was nervous. I had a burger here years ago and I remember it being good, but I couldn't remember much more than that, and the last thing I wanted was to hand a bad review to a place I love.

My order

The usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, no cheese. It came to $15.00, not a cheap burger, and it showed up open faced with fries on the side, red onion, lettuce and a single slice of pickle. Clear grill marks on the patty, and the whole thing felt heavy in my hand. Like I told Robyn, a burger better be heavy for 15 bucks.

First bite at Mick & Angelo's

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and the relief hit me right away. A nice, meaty, juicy patty, thick enough that it had to be at least a quarter pounder. I've had dry burgers on this quest. This one was dripping. I think they might butter the bun, and the burger had real flavour.

One problem: that one big honking pickle. Instead of being spread across the burger, it sat in a single spot, so one bite was all pickle and the rest had none. I had to run a QB sneak right up the middle just to find it. Work around it, though, and the burger is good.

How I broke it down

  • Bun: Looked good and held together well, possibly buttered.
  • Patty: Thick, heavy, juicy and full of flavour. The star of the plate.
  • Toppings: Lettuce, red onion and one oversized pickle slice that threw off the distribution.
  • Value: $15.00 is on the high side, but you get fries and plenty of beef.

Patty first

My big takeaway was the beef. I barely needed the toppings at all, because when the patty is this good, the Gold Medal Burger lives on. I also know the risk of scoring high this early in the quest: set the bar too high and you make it tough for anybody to beat.

My verdict

An easy 8.2. Mick & Angelo's serves a thick, juicy, well built burger, held back only by a pickle that needed slicing and spreading out. If you're on Lundy's Lane, come here any time and get anything on the menu, the burger included.
