Jeffro's BBQ Burger Review – Niagara Falls, ON
So many of you told me to try Jeffro's BBQ that this became a big review. Robyn and I headed to old downtown Niagara Falls on Queen Street to see what the hype was about. The Gold Medal Burger scores a 6.8, landing at #94 out of 140 on my rankings, and I think it can do better.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $9.04, a fair price. It was a big burger, a little light on the pickle, with red onion and lettuce. Best of all, it was falling apart, and I took that as a good sign. I don't mind a messy burger.
Before the bite, I laid down the challenge: if it's good, you can all tell me "I told you so." If it's not, you wasted my time.
One bite, everybody knows the rules
The flavour of the meat was really good, with a char on the outside and a nice crisp. But it wasn't juicy. Not burnt, but cooked to the point that the juice was gone from the middle. It felt like a burger that needed a little sauce, and a Gold Medal Burger shouldn't need any sauce at all.
I have a theory about the hype. A lot of people love Jeffro's for its specialty burgers, piled with toppings and sauce. Strip it down to a Gold Medal Burger and you find out what the burger itself is made of.
The breakdown
- Bun: Toasted the way I like it.
- Patty: Big with great beef flavour and a good char, but dry in the middle.
- Toppings: Red onion and plenty of lettuce falling everywhere, light on the pickle.
- Value: $9.04 for a big burger.
So close
This one frustrated me, because the pieces were there. Cook it one minute less and it's juicy, and with that char and flavour it would be up near the top of the list. I bet it's juicy on some days. This wasn't one of them.
My verdict
On this day in Niagara Falls, Jeffro's BBQ gets a 6.8. I'd come back and give them a shot at redemption.
