This review came early in my quest, at a time when Robyn and I were starting to wonder if Niagara had any good burgers at all. Kame & Kettle Beer Works in Fonthill gave me hope. The craft brewery scores an 8.4, good for #33 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Out of the dungeon

I'd never been to Kame & Kettle before. To get inside I had to walk down what I can only call a dungeon tunnel, and at the bottom I found a super cool, almost hipster space focused on craft beer. I picked up the burger to go.

My order

The Gold Medal Burger is a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. This time there was a catch. They told me up front they weren't sure they had onion, and in the end there was none. The burger cost $14.95, though I didn't see the total in the moment because they emailed me the receipt.

It came in a plastic bag with a bag of chips, wrapped in straight-up tin foil. I like their style. Inside: a bun with some goodness on top, lettuce and plenty of pickle.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and I finally got what I'd been waiting for. A juicy burger. After so many dry ones, I was thrilled. The flavour came from both the bun and the patty, and I picked up something extra that had to be mustard seeds. Not everyday yellow mustard, but seeds, and I love the uniqueness of it.

The lettuce was a little soggy, but I'll chalk that up to all the juice. Hard to complain about that.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Full of flavour, with something on top that caught my attention.
  • Patty: Juicy, finally. The best thing about it.
  • Seasoning: A mustard seed note that made it stand out.
  • Toppings: Lots of pickle and lettuce that got a little soggy. No onion.
  • Value: $14.95, on the higher end.

What the onion cost them

I'll be direct. If they'd had onion, I could have given them a better score. They were already getting a good score anyway.

My verdict

Kame & Kettle set a new bar at the time, and I left with my faith in Niagara burgers restored. A juicy patty, a flavourful bun and that mustard seed twist earn an 8.4. Thank you, Kame & Kettle. There's hope for Niagara and burgers after all.
