Peter Piper's Pubhouse Burger Review – Fonthill, ON
Plenty of people have told me Peter Piper's Pubhouse in Fonthill has a good burger. The Gold Medal Burger I got on this visit didn't back that up. It scored a 5.4, which puts it at #124 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
A strong start
Peter Piper's sits off Highway 20 in Fonthill, sharing a parking lot with the LCBO. We ordered ahead: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. They said it would be ready in ten minutes, and it was ready in ten minutes. That kind of reliability earned them an early point from me. Inside on a Saturday afternoon, the place was busy, jazz was playing and it had a nice vibe overall. The price was $15.00.
Build your own
The burger came in a box that took me a moment to figure out how to open. Inside was an open-faced burger with grill marks on the patty, lettuce and onion, and the pickles placed on the side. So I built it myself. One bite, everybody knows the rules.
First bite
The patty was huge, probably a quarter pound. The pickles were really, really salty. The burger was a little hard to handle, and the big problem showed up right away: it was overcooked. Maybe it's because they can't serve a burger medium-rare, but whatever the reason, it was cooked past where it should be.
The breakdown
- Patty: Big, around a quarter pound, with grill marks, but overcooked.
- Lettuce: Nice and leafy.
- Onion: Thick cut, which I liked.
- Pickles: Served on the side and very salty.
- Size: The right size for a burger.
- Service: Quick and right on time.
My verdict
I've eaten at Peter Piper's before and had a lot of great things there. This burger just wasn't one of them. Fast service, a good-sized patty and leafy lettuce kept it from sinking lower, but an overcooked patty and very salty pickles hold it to a 5.4. My call: not worth the drive for the Gold Medal Burger. If you're a regular, stick with your favourites on the menu.
