Bob's Place Burger Review – Dunnville, ON
Ever since I started the Gold Medal Burger quest, people in Dunnville have been telling me about Bob's Place: the pizza, the wings and the burger. So Robyn and I headed to Bob's Place Family Restaurant on Queen Street, near downtown and across from the RBC. The burger scores a 6.8, good for #95 out of 140 on my rankings.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, and I was able to order it without fries. It came to $10.16, right around average for the quest, and showed up in a paper bag. It felt heavy in my hand and smelled good.
First look
The bun had a nice shine to it. Underneath were iceberg lettuce, a full slice of onion and something I had never seen on the quest before: julienne-cut pickles. The patty was a frozen one, and that's okay with me. So far on the quest, I've found frozen patties are often juicier than homemade ones. Not always, but often.
One bite, everybody knows the rules
Nothing wrong with this burger. I came up with a new category for it on the spot: the backyard barbecue burger, the kind you'd throw on the grill at home on a Sunday afternoon. It was juicy and not overcooked, and believe me, you can still overcook a frozen patty. You can only do so much with one, but Bob's did it right.
I kept coming back to the toppings. The onion was a full slice, cut the way I like it, and those julienne pickles were so unusual I had to hold one up for the camera. Simple toppings, done with a little care.
The breakdown
- Bun: Shiny and good.
- Patty: Frozen, but juicy and cooked properly.
- Pickles: Julienne cut, a first for the quest.
- Onions and lettuce: A full slice of onion and crisp iceberg lettuce.
- Value: $10.16, about average.
My verdict
This isn't a burger that will win the quest, but it's one you could eat any day of the week. My suggestion: come in, grab a beer and have a burger for ten bucks. Bob's Place earns a 6.8, a good, honest burger.
