I stepped just outside Niagara for this one and found a burger worth the drive. Debb's Cuisine On Queen, near the corner of Main and Queen in Dunnville, scores an 8.5 and sits at #25 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings. It also earned a new label on the quest: my first official fancy burger.

A place I'd heard about for years

I'd been hearing about Debb's ever since I started Must See Mondays, but I'd never been. I was impressed walking in: nice brick walls, music playing and a good atmosphere all around.

My order

The usual Gold Medal Burger: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. It isn't a cheap one at $13.56, a little above average, but it came out in style, inside a paper bag and a fancy box. Fancy box, fancy burger? I was about to find out.

Inside: a toasted bun topped with what looked like sesame and maybe poppy seeds, pickle that might have been bread and butter, red onion and a single leaf of lettuce on the bottom that looked like romaine. They told me the patty was homemade, and the whole thing had good weight to it.

First bite in Dunnville

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and I was sold. Who knew that stepping outside Niagara would turn up a burger this good? I've heard people make fun of Dunnville before, and after this bite I have no idea why. This burger was cooked exactly the way I like it.

This is not a backyard burger, though. This is a fancy burger, the first one I've classified that way on the quest, and my message to the rest of Niagara is to take note. If you want to know how to make a burger, come to Dunnville.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted and seeded, though I couldn't tell you exactly what kind.
  • Patty: Homemade and cooked just right.
  • Seasoning: My one knock. It was missing just a little more salt.
  • Toppings: Red onion, possibly bread and butter pickles and a single leaf of lettuce.
  • Value: $13.56, above average, but you get a fancy burger in a fancy box.

My verdict

Debb's Cuisine On Queen delivers a well cooked, well built burger in a nice room. A touch more salt might have pushed it higher, but this is a very good burger. It scores an 8.5, and I'll say it again: Dunnville makes good burgers.
