A convenience store burger was not supposed to be this good. Avondale Food Stores in Wainfleet, my favourite place in the whole world, serves up an 8.3 burger for $6.77. It ranks #35 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings, and I'm calling it the best value in all of Niagara.

About that nickname

I filmed a Must See Monday here before. When I called corporate for permission, the answer was a sure thing, Joe, with one favour: please don't call it by my nickname for the store. I love the place. You can get groceries for the week, beer, lottery tickets and, as it turns out, a great burger.

My order

No calling ahead, no planning, no script this time, just the Gold Medal Burger: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The price was $6.77, and I love the efficient packaging. Tight, no waste.

Inside: a lightly toasted bun with a dusting on top, lettuce, three horizontally sliced pickles, grilled onions and a patty that was breaking apart. They told me straight up the patty was frozen, not homemade. I was expecting a backyard burger.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and I was confused in the best way. This did not taste like a backyard burger whatsoever. It reminded me of a hamburger steak, the old-school dish of a patty served with gravy, even though there was no gravy anywhere. You absolutely do not need any sauce on this one.

The grilled onions were a big part of it, and so was the bun. I could not figure out how a frozen patty could taste this good. My best guess: it's frozen with unicorn tears.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Lightly toasted, with a dusted top. Amazing.
  • Patty: Frozen, but juicy and flavourful. The best backyard burger I've ever had in my life.
  • Toppings: Grilled onions, lettuce and three horizontal pickle slices.
  • Value: $6.77. The best value in Niagara.

My verdict

I settled the score with a little personal history: 1983, the year the burger man was born, makes it an 8.3. It isn't the best burger on the quest, but it might be the best value, and it outdid other Wainfleet burgers that were barely scraping into the sevens. Usually Robyn and I give leftover review burgers away to people who need a meal. Not this one. I took it home, and Robyn didn't get a bite.
