Ask around Niagara about burgers and Breakwall Brewing Company in Port Colborne comes up a lot. Some people told me it's the best in Niagara, some said the world, some said the universe. On a rainy day, I finally put it to the test. Breakwall scores an 8.2 and ranks #42 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Some history

I reached out to Breakwall a long time ago about filming a Must See Monday and never heard anything back. I put that aside for this review. Everybody starts at zero, and nobody loses marks for not inviting me.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. Before we even arrived, Robyn got a call saying the burger was ready, a first on the quest. How do I not give points for that? When I walked in, the owner, Conrad, introduced himself. Robyn had placed the order, but they saw lettuce, onion and pickle only and figured it was for the burger man. I liked that.

The price was $13.56, not a cheap burger. The packaging had air vents, which I noticed right away. Inside: a toasted bun, a steaming homemade patty, crinkle cut pickles, sliced red onion and shredded lettuce. It smelled amazing. I'd been eating burgers all over Niagara that day, and my mouth was still watering.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. This is one of the best homemade patties I've had. Juicy, dripping and cooked very nicely. I also liked the red onions and the crinkle cut pickles.

My one wish was a craft beer to go with it. They brew right there, and an IPA would have paired perfectly.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted. I couldn't tell you what kind.
  • Patty: Homemade, juicy and cooked very nicely. One of the best on the quest.
  • Toppings: Crinkle cut pickles, red onion and shredded lettuce. The onions were on point.
  • Service: Courteous, and they knew the burger man when he walked in.
  • Value: $13.56. A few bucks more than some.

My verdict

I knew this was a big review for a lot of Breakwall fans, and I didn't want to mess it up. Past the sixes and sevens, into the eights, I landed on an 8.2. It's a good burger with a great patty. With a craft beer in my hand to wash it down, it might have scored even better.
