The guy behind the bar at the Queens Hotel in Dunnville told me they had the best burger in town, so I put that to the test on my Gold Medal Burger quest. The Queens Merritt Room sits right by the corner of Queen and Main, across from the bridge and the Dunnville sign, and its burger scored a 7.7, #61 out of 140 on my rankings.

I'd never been in before, but I liked the place right away. I got talking with a regular named Bill, great guy, who told me he was a police officer in Dunnville for years. I walked out convinced Dunnville is a great place, and the friendly people (and a nice little puppy) only helped.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for just $7.91. That's one of the better prices on the quest. The build: a sesame seed bun with a little toast on it, a couple of pieces of iceberg lettuce, nicely sliced white onion, pickles and a homemade patty.

First bite in Dunnville

The burger was hot and juicy. One bite, everybody knows the rules. I'll tell you this: if I ever hear anybody say a bad word about Dunnville again, I'm sending them here for this burger. It's not the best in Niagara, but it's better than plenty of them.

The one thing holding it back was sweetness. The pickles were bread and butter pickles, and I couldn't tell if it was just the pickles or the meat too, but the whole burger came across sweet. I like bread and butter pickles, but they changed the character of this burger.

Breaking it down

  • Bun: Sesame seed, lightly toasted.
  • Patty: Homemade, thick and good, a few ounces in size.
  • Toppings: I liked the way the onions were cut, and the lettuce was there, but those sweet pickles stood out the most.
  • Value: Seven bucks and change. Hard to argue with that.

My verdict

I wanted to take it into the eights but I just couldn't get there, the sweetness toned it down. Still, there's nothing wrong with this burger. It's a good homemade burger at a great price, and I gave it a 7.7. Ray Bourque all day. If you're passing through Dunnville, the Queens is worth a stop.
