Port Colborne feels like my second home. I went to school there for five years. The Spot Bar & Grill on King Street was my third visit to the restaurant and my first Gold Medal Burger there. Third time's a charm. It scores an 8.4 and ranks #28 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Not a Must See Monday

I filmed a Must See Monday at the Spot, where I ate the Forty Creek burger with all the fixings, sauce and onion ring included. Fun Joe fact for all the fact checkers: that's one of the rare times you'll see me eat a burger that isn't a Gold Medal Burger on video. This visit was different. Nobody knew we were coming. No calls ahead, just an order and a review.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, basically the Forty Creek burger stripped down to the basics. The price was $9.61. It came with chopped lettuce, chopped onion, vertically sliced pickles and the patty, and it was dripping before I took a bite.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and I knew something different was going on. The patty had a char on the outside but stayed juicy, like the juices had been sealed in. I worked through a few more bites trying to figure it out, then it hit me: it tastes like a steak. A steak burger, and one of my favourite patties on the quest. Bold statement, I know.

It made me want a fork and knife, a baked potato and a corn on the cob. Next time I might even get it wrapped in lettuce, keto style, so the patty can shine on its own.

The breakdown

  • Patty: Phenomenal. Charred, juicy and steak-like.
  • Onions: Excellent, and maybe local, since 'tis the season.
  • Pickles: Not my favourite. Homemade pickles would have made it phenomenal. At least they were vertically sliced.
  • Bun: Good and lightly toasted, but almost too soft for all that juice. It got a little soggy.
  • Value: $9.61 for a patty this good is hard to beat.

My verdict

The patty is the reason to come. The pickles pulled the score down a little and the bun struggled with the juice, but this is a very good burger. I gave the Spot an 8.4, and it's one of the best burgers in Port Colborne. If you go on a Thursday, there's an open mic too.
