Beacon Harbourside Burger Review – Jordan Station, ON
This was my first ever visit to the Beacon Harbourside kitchen and bar on the North Service Road in Jordan, with Lake Ontario out back and an inflatable water park full of kids floating just offshore. I came in with low expectations and left impressed. The Beacon scores a 7.8, #59 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
The Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, cost $15.82, right in the Jordan price range. It came in a plastic bag with house ketchup, mustard and vinegar. Robyn kept the ketchup for the fridge.
The Don Cherry mystery
When you walk in, Don Cherry's sports grill is on one side and the Beacon is straight ahead. The burger came from the Beacon, but the napkins said Don Cherry's. Robyn and I were both confused about whether it's the same kitchen, and I ended up cleaning my face with Don Cherry's napkins while eating a Beacon burger.
First bite
Vertically sliced pickles, plenty of red onion and lettuce on a nice bun. Not light on the pickles and not light on the onion. I wasn't sure whether the patty was homemade. I didn't think it was a backyard patty, but I also didn't think it was made that day. Either way, the flavours were good.
- Bun: A nice bun, with a very good bun to burger ratio.
- Patty: Hot and flavourful, though I doubt it was freshly made.
- Pickles: Probably not homemade, but a good pickle, and plenty of them.
- Onion: Generous red onion, which I liked.
- Value: $15.82, typical for Jordan.
Better than expected
I had never really heard much about the Beacon and didn't know what to expect. The burger was better than I thought it would be. Even with my patty doubts, the bun to burger ratio was spot on and every bite had plenty of red onion and pickle, which counts for a lot on a Gold Medal Burger.
My verdict
A 7.8, much better than I anticipated. My plan for next time: bring my swim trunks, work up an appetite on that inflatable park, then come back to the Beacon for some food.
