Chop House Burger Bar Burger Review – St. Catharines, ON
I had never been to Chop House Burger Bar on Martindale in St. Catharines and figured it was a one-off. Right before I walked in, Robyn told me it was connected to U Need a Pita, and she was right. She's always right, as she likes to remind me. The Gold Medal Burger here scores a 6.8, landing at #96 out of 140 on my rankings.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $11.29. Chop House gave me a choice I'd never seen before: 100% Angus beef, or a 50/50 blend of Angus and ground bacon. I went all Angus. It might make a good poll, though: would you put bacon in your burger patty?
The packaging gets a thumbs up from me. Nice and tight, and not styrofoam.
First look
A big, thick patty, horizontally sliced pickles, a bit of red onion and chopped lettuce. It got me thinking about the U Need a Pita burger in Welland, one of the first stops of the quest, which scored a 7.1 with two thin patties stacked together, both nice and juicy.
One bite, everybody knows the rules
Not bad. The flavours were working, the bun was very good and the bun to patty ratio was right. But this patty was thick, and it wasn't as juicy as its sister burger. A little dry. Diced onions aren't quite my thing either. The pickles tasted vinegary, and I don't think they were homemade.
I tried the patty on its own and it was good. The bun on its own was good too. But put them together and the whole thing came across a little dry.
The breakdown
- Bun: Very good.
- Patty: Thick 100% Angus with good flavour, but on the dry side.
- Toppings: Horizontal pickles, diced red onion and chopped lettuce.
- Packaging: Tight, and no styrofoam.
- Value: $11.29, a fair price.
My verdict
Chop House makes a good burger at a good price, and nothing about it tastes wrong. But I liked the thinner, juicier patties at U Need a Pita better. Chop House Burger Bar earns a 6.8.
