This one hurts. I loved the people at Boo's Bar & Eatery at 2980 King Street, at the bottom of the hill in Jordan in the Town of Lincoln, but the Gold Medal Burger scored a 4.9. That puts it at #131 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Meeting Boo

I got this burger straight from Boo herself, and I didn't even realize she was Boo until we started talking. She told me it's a family business and that the burger has won a Ruby Award. It's not a homemade patty, but an award-winning burger had me curious. By the end of the visit, Boo was my favourite person I'd spoken to all day.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, the standardized burger I order everywhere so every place gets the same test. The price was $8.58, a very good price for anywhere, let alone this part of Niagara wine country.

What's on it

A plain bun, iceberg lettuce, thinly and horizontally sliced pickles, and onions sliced in a way I really liked, with a good amount of them. The patty was a backyard burger. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

First bite

The burger was juicy. So juicy, in fact, that it soaked the bottom bun and made it soggy. Juicy is usually a good thing, but here it exposed the bun. This burger needs a different bun to hold up. The lettuce, onion and pickle were done right. The patty and bun just weren't my style.

  • Bun: Not the style that gets me excited, and it went soggy.
  • Patty: Very juicy, but backyard style.
  • Onion: A highlight. Sliced well and generous.
  • Pickles: Thin, horizontal slices, done right.
  • Lettuce: A nice amount of iceberg.
  • Value: $8.58, under ten bucks.

My verdict

I'll say it again: this one hurts. Boo was great, Jordan is beautiful, Jordan Hollow Park sits right across the street and the flea market is next door. But a backyard patty that turns the bun soggy scores a 4.9. I'll be back "one million percent" to see Boo and try other things on the menu. The burger just isn't my style.
