PL8 OF FRIES sits at the corner of West Main and Prince Charles in Welland. The name tells you the specialty, but I came for the Gold Medal Burger. It scores a 5.8, good for #118 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

I ordered a burger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. When the guy at the counter asked about fries, I told him I was just splitting the burger with Robyn. A first on the quest followed: he handed me a plastic knife so we could share it. Thoughtful! It came to $6.50, a very good price, in tight, light packaging.

The pickle problem

There was a catch. The shop had no pickles. The owner told me he doesn't like pickles, so there was relish instead. That started a debate. Relish is basically chopped up pickle, and I've seen diced pickles on the quest before. But relish is a condiment, and the Gold Medal Burger is lettuce, onion and pickle.

A first look

Shredded lettuce, thinly sliced onion and a patty unlike any I've seen before. The bun felt lightly toasted, and it was a compact burger overall.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. She's hot and ready. I don't think it was a pre-made backyard patty, but I also don't think it was made fresh that day. It wasn't dripping with juice, but it wasn't dry either. I suspect there's something other than beef in the mix.

  • Bun: Lightly toasted and compact.
  • Patty: An unusual patty, cooked well enough but probably not all beef.
  • Toppings: Shredded lettuce, thin onion and relish in place of pickle.
  • Value: $6.50 is one of the better prices on the quest.

Second time in Welland

This was at least the second time a place in Welland didn't have a pickle for my Gold Medal Burger. Without one, it's barely a silver medal burger.

My verdict

A 5.8 for PL8 OF FRIES. The owner was a really nice guy, the price is great, and the menu goes well beyond burgers with onion rings and chicken fingers. I also spotted a sign for clam chowder on Fridays. I love clam chowder, so the next time I'm driving by on a Friday and haven't eaten, I'm stopping in for a bowl.
