The Urban Steakhouse & Lounge Burger Review – Fonthill, ON
The Urban Steakhouse & Lounge sits at the corner of Highway 20 and Rice Road in Fonthill, and it's one of my favourite lunch spots. I've eaten there plenty of times, but this was my first burger there. The Urban earns an 8.7, good for #17 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
Robyn ordered ahead: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $15.81. It was one of the servers' birthdays, so I offered to buy her a shot, and the whole group ended up doing a round of chilled Southern Comfort: me, Robyn, the owner, the birthday girl and a guy at the bar. The owner wouldn't let me pay for the round and made it clear it was not a bribe. She wanted an honest review.
My usual lunch here is soup and salad. It's affordable, I'm in and out in 15 minutes, and the house-made dressing and chipotle chicken corn chowder are delicious.
First look
The burger came in new, smaller packaging meant to cut waste. A little tight for this burger, but fine for a short trip. It smelled great. Inside: a toasted bun, chopped romaine, what looked like a pickle spear sliced up, thinly sliced red onion and a homemade patty.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules, and the burger juices were flowing. I wanted a straw for them. Since the staff knew who I was, I hope this is the same burger everyone else gets. I don't think The Urban is that kind of place, but I've seen it happen elsewhere.
The breakdown
- Bun: Butter toasted and delicious. Maybe slightly bun heavy at first, but with this much juice, the extra bun keeps it from going soggy.
- Patty: Lots of beef, homemade and very juicy, with one flavour I couldn't quite place.
- Toppings: Chopped romaine, sliced pickles and thin red onion.
- Value: $15.81 for a big, juicy burger.
Dancing on the nines
I was right on the edge of the nines. Robyn has told me I sometimes get burger remorse after scoring too high, so I went with my gut and the low end of my range. What kept it out of the nines wasn't quality but style. I like a more compact burger, like reigning champion oddbird, which is a one-handed slam. This one has a little more to it.
My verdict
An honest 8.7, no bribes, for a delicious burger I just wanted to keep eating. If you're driving around Fonthill, there are a couple of good spots, and The Urban is one of them.
