Bada Bing Roadhouse Burger Review – Welland, ON
I've driven past Bada Bing Roadhouse in Welland more times than I can count, but I had never eaten there. That changed on this stop on Prince Charles, right across from Hoople's. The Gold Medal Burger here scores a 7.1, putting Bada Bing at #86 out of 140 burgers on my quest.
Inside the roadhouse
The lady working the counter was friendly from the second I walked in, and she laughed when she heard what I was up to. The room has drop-down ceiling tiles decorated with Blue Jays logos and plenty of other memorabilia. I just hope there isn't one up there with my face and a bull's-eye on it after this review. They also run karaoke Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for a very fair $8.46. She was upfront with me before I even opened it: the patty isn't homemade, but it's a good burger. Inside I found a toasted bun, lettuce, onion and vertically sliced pickles, and I was pumped to see those after a run of spears and horizontal slices lately.
One bite, everybody knows the rules
She was right. For a backyard burger, this was not bad at all. The bun was fresh, the burger was hot in my hands, and the pickles brought a refreshing crunch. I could tell the patty hadn't been sitting in the freezer for ages, and it had good flavour for what it is. Like I've said before on the quest, you can only do so much with a backyard patty, and Bada Bing did about as well as you can.
The onions were sweet, and with Hoople's right across the street, I had to wonder out loud if that's where they come from. The patty clearly isn't from there, though. And hey, this is a burger review, not a meat review.
How it breaks down
- Bun: Fresh and toasted.
- Patty: A store-bought backyard patty, but cooked well with good flavour.
- Toppings: Vertically sliced pickles and sweet onions, both solid.
- Atmosphere: Friendly staff and a sports-bar feel with Blue Jays decor.
- Value: $8.46, a good price for what you get.
My verdict
Nothing wrong with this burger. It's a 7.1, honest about what it is, and served by people who made me feel welcome on my first visit. I'm already planning a return trip, because every time I drive by I see liver and onions on the sign, and I've never had liver and onions in a restaurant. Bada Bing might be where that finally happens.
