Fat Cats is a pizza place on Rockwood in St. Catharines, and I'd never been there before a good buddy told me I had to go. Robyn orders from there all the time at work. This time I stopped in for the Gold Medal Burger, which scored a 7.2, #79 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

Inside, I spotted a deal that caught my eye: a huge slice and a drink for four bucks. The part owner told me a lot is made in house, including the burger patty.

I nearly lost track of the price digging for a receipt that seemed to have vanished, but we confirmed the total in the end.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $10.68. This was not a small burger. It came on a toasted bun with what looked like romaine, a little diced white onion (I've seen more), horizontally sliced pickles and a big patty.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. The burger was well done, but there were juices dripping, which confused me at first. My conclusion: when you cook on a grill, sometimes the juices drip right through. The patty was far from dry and had a nice char flavour that I liked. I think I caught a few mustard seeds in there. The pickles tasted like dill.

The issue was the bun. On the first bite I got a thin patty and a lot of bread. You'd need two or three patties to level out that ratio.

Breaking it down

  • Bun: Toasted and fine, just way too much of it.
  • Patty: Homemade, char-grilled and full of flavour. I could eat it on its own.
  • Toppings: Romaine, a little diced onion and dill pickles.
  • Value: $10.68, and it will fill you up.

I kept coming back to the same point: the patty alone would be a winner. Stack another one or two on that bun and this burger would climb a lot higher.

My verdict

I said "patty" so many times because the patty is really good. The bun ratio is what holds this burger back, and it lands at 7.2. I'm coming back for that four dollar slice and drink, because the slice I saw looked bigger than my head.
