I hadn't set foot in Kaz's Pub on St. Paul Street in St. Catharines in 15 or 20 years. I'm pretty sure it was still Kaz's back when I was a student at Brock. The Gold Medal Burger quest brought me back, and the burger scored a 5.6, landing at #122 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

A big room downtown

This place is huge inside. Three pool tables, a table hockey game and plenty of seating. The guy who served us was nice and helpful, though he wasn't interested in being on camera.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. It's the same burger I order everywhere, so every stop gets tested the same way. At $16.94, Kaz's sits toward the upper end of the price range on the quest. It showed up with a toothpick holding it together, and I had to ask Robyn: does it look like the burger on my shirt?

What's on it

A toasted sesame seed bun, a patty, vertically sliced pickles, red onion rings and iceberg lettuce leaves sitting on the bottom bun. Nothing fancy, nothing missing. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

First bite

My first impression: the patty doesn't look sexy, but it doesn't taste bad. It looks homemade, but it's small. I'd guess about three ounces, which feels light for a $16.94 burger. The pickles were sour, really sour, and pickles are supposed to be salty. The bun was fine and did its job.

  • Bun: Toasted sesame seed. Fine.
  • Patty: Looks homemade and tastes okay, but small, around three ounces by my guess.
  • Pickles: Vertically sliced and very sour.
  • Onion and lettuce: Red onion rings and iceberg leaves, standard pub fare.
  • Value: $16.94 for a small patty is steep.

My verdict

I can sum it up in a few words: not a bad burger, not a great burger. It flew right down the middle of the pack. There's nothing wrong with Kaz's version of the Gold Medal Burger, but nothing about it stands out either, and the price doesn't match the size of the patty. It's a 5.6. If you're on St. Paul Street for a game of pool and a beer, it'll do the job. If you're hunting for the best burger in St. Catharines, keep walking.
