Not even Thanksgiving stops the Gold Medal Burger quest. Robyn and I were out visiting family in Westport, the village between Ottawa and Kingston, and we stopped at the Lost Penny Pub. Just one problem: no burgers on the menu. The sliders scored a 5.4, good for #123 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

A slider compromise

Since the Lost Penny didn't have a full burger, I compromised and ordered three sliders done the Gold Medal way: lettuce, onion and pickle only. The bill for the sliders was $13.56. Each little burger came held together with a toothpick and a whole pickle on top, which I had to pull off before I could even think about eating it.

One bite, one slider

A slider called for a true one-bite challenge, so I put the whole thing in my mouth at once. Not the best idea I've had in my life. Once I could talk again, I picked one apart to see what was going on.

The bun was a lightly toasted mini bun and the patty was about the size of a toonie. It came out hot and looked homemade, but it was a little dry. Funny enough, I thought the patty tasted a bit better on its own. The burger to bun ratio was good, which is not always a given with sliders.

The pickle steals the show

  • Pickle: The star. A sweet, whole gherkin-style pickle, one of my favourites. They didn't slice it, but that's alright.
  • Lettuce: Leafy, fresh and a nice touch.
  • Bun: A lightly toasted mini bun with a good ratio to the patty.
  • Patty: Hot and likely homemade, but dry and tiny.
  • Value: $13.56 for three sliders at a sit-down pub.

Around the table

The sliders were only part of the spread. We also had wings, deep-fried pickles, jalapenos and fries on the table, and the sangria was a winner. One of the best sangrias I've had. Westport itself gets a thumbs up too: a cute town with plenty of little shops worth walking around.

My verdict

Let's be real, this is not a burger. It's not juicy and it's not dripping. These sliders are cute, the pickle is excellent and the sangria is delicious, but as an entry on the Gold Medal Burger quest, the Lost Penny Pub lands at a 5.4. Go for the drinks, the wings and the small-town charm, then go for a walk and make some happenings.
