The Trap Burger Review – Fonthill, ON
Robyn and I were just at The Trap on Highway 20 in Fonthill for wing week, and the wings were spectacular. I came back to see if the burger measured up. It did. The Trap scores an 8.4, good for #32 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
My usual Gold Medal Burger: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. When I ordered by phone, they told me it was the same price with or without a side, so no side. The total was $13.56. Tucked in with the order: mints. I don't think I'd seen that before on the quest.
Inside: a big bun, a patty that looked homemade with what might have been a little bit of garlic in it, and thin vertically sliced pickles, all held together with a toothpick.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. The first thing I noticed was the bun: crispy, toasted and, I'm pretty sure, buttered. A really good bun. The onions were good, and the burger was juicy. I couldn't tell at first if it was burger juice or pickle juice, but it was a good burger either way.
I'll admit I thought the Trap might just be a good wing place. This burger proved me wrong.
A 30 year regular
Mid-review, I asked a guy nearby if he'd had the burger before. His answer: he's been eating at the Trap for 30 years, and the burger is fantastic. I can see why.
The breakdown
- Bun: Big, toasted and buttered. The bun to burger ratio is off, but the bun is so good it makes up for it.
- Patty: Homemade and cooked well, with a hint of garlic.
- Pickles: Just okay on their own, but really good with the burger.
- Onions: Good.
- Value: $13.56 with no side, and mints on the house.
My verdict
I came in for the follow up to great wings and left thoroughly impressed with the burger too. The ratio isn't perfect, but the bun carries it, and the homemade patty is cooked right. The Trap earns an 8.4. People have been coming here for 30 years, and I'll probably be coming for the next 30.
