The Gold Medal Burger quest finally left Niagara! Everybody had been telling me Hamilton has great burgers, so we loaded up the car for a road trip and pulled into The Burnt Tongue. The result: a 6.6, which puts it at #100 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Robyn and I had eaten at The Burnt Tongue before, but at a different location. There are several of them around Hamilton, and this was my first time ever reviewing a burger in the city.

A new guest at the table

Riding along with us was Cole, the brand-new first member of my Right Choice Realty team, making his debut as a guest reviewer. Cole admitted the Gold Medal Burger wasn't his forte. His problem? Onions. He's not a fan. He ate it anyway. Welcome to the team, brother.

My order

The usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. Two burgers came to $14.69, which works out to $7.31 each on my scoresheet. I was surprised. People had warned me the city would be expensive, but this was cheaper than some single burgers I've bought back home in Niagara.

What came out of the bag

The patty was thin, with real grill marks on it. The pickles were sliced horizontally, and there were a lot of them. The shape reminded me of a pocket burger, small enough that it's almost a one-bite burger.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

The verdict around the table was "not bad." The patty had good char, and I could easily eat a few of these in one sitting. The thin patty reminded me a little of a McDonald's patty, the kind where you could probably get ten of them out of a pound of beef.

  • Bun: A small, soft bun that suits the pocket-burger size.
  • Patty: Thin, grill-marked and nicely charred, but not much of it.
  • Toppings: Plenty of pickle, which Cole hit right away. It took me a while to find mine.
  • Value: Very good. Under eight dollars a burger is hard to beat on the quest.

The scores

Cole started with a round number, and I had to remind him right away that round numbers are for rookies. Decimal places are mandatory. I landed on a 6.6, and Robyn, from behind the camera, went a little higher. Everybody was in the sixes.

My verdict

The Burnt Tongue is better known for its soups, and I remember them being fantastic on our last visit to the other location. I spotted loaded baked potato soup and a sweet potato option on the board. The burger is a solid, cheap, thin-patty burger with good char, but it isn't a contender for the top of my list. My advice: grab a soup for the road, and don't leave Hamilton without stopping at the Donut Monster shop right behind it. We sure weren't going to.
