The Lock Wood Fired Pizza Burger Review – Port Colborne, ON

This one was a first in more ways than one. At my top fan event at Storage Guys, The Lock Wood Fired Pizza from Port Colborne brought their mobile oven and made a top-secret exclusive for the party: a Gold Medal Burger pizza. I had never reviewed a burger pizza before, and never done a review at a fan event. I called it an 8.7 on camera.

Bending the rules, just this once

A Gold Medal Burger is lettuce, onion and pickle only. I could see some cheese and what looked like tomato on this pizza, but today it didn't matter. This was a special occasion, and I love The Lock.

A guest judge

I brought in Jackson, one of my favorite fans ever, to help with the review. Jackson picked his slice fresh out of the oven, I made sure there was a pickle on it, and we did a little cheers before the first bite.

First bite

My first reaction: that's pretty good. It's the best Gold Medal Burger pizza I've ever had. Here's how it broke down:

  • Crust: Made with double zero flour and cooked perfectly. You'd never know it came out of a mobile oven rather than the restaurant.
  • Beef: Ground beef across the pie, giving it the burger flavor.
  • Lettuce: Still crunchy. They must add it after the bake so it doesn't wilt.
  • Onion and pickle: Both there, with sweet pickles that I liked on the pizza.

If I had to imagine what a Gold Medal Burger pizza should taste like, this is it.

The scores

Jackson went big with a 9.9. A little high, but I see where he's coming from. My own score was an 8.7, and I told Jackson he was pretty close and clearly knows what he's talking about. He kept going back for more slices.

My verdict

This wasn't an official Gold Medal Burger, so there's no ranking here. But as a one-off creation, The Lock nailed the idea: burger flavors on a perfectly cooked wood fired crust. Jackson even wore his GMB shirt to the party. I settled on 8.7, and we both left happy.
