Robyn and I didn't realize we'd ordered a vegan burger until we got to Boon Burger Cafe on Ottawa Street near Argyle in Hamilton. The signs are covered in animals, so we figured we were getting meat. The plant-based Gold Medal Burger scored a 2.7, putting it last, #140 out of 140, on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $11.02. Not bad. The woman at the counter was nice, but the place is strict about outside food, so I had to throw out the coffee I walked in with. That's fine by me. They're super accommodating for anyone with allergies.

What came out

The burger came in a paper bag with hearts on the packaging, and I liked the presentation. It looked healthy. Lots of lettuce, the pickles hiding underneath it, and a little light on the red onion. The bun looked like a multigrain style bun. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

First bite

It's healthy. I could taste the grains in the bun, and Robyn described it as very clean. Beyond that, the burger was missing a lot. It needs the sauces, and the patty was kind of mushy.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Grainy and healthy tasting.
  • Patty: Plant-based and mushy.
  • Toppings: Plenty of lettuce, pickles tucked underneath, light on the onion.
  • Service: Friendly and accommodating, with strict outside food rules.
  • Value: $11.02.

Not a knock on vegans

This came right after a disappointing vegan burger in St. Catharines, so I want to be clear. I love vegans, I've got Beyond Meat burgers in my freezer at home, and I'd just enjoyed a night of vegan cheeses with a friend. This just isn't my kind of burger.

My verdict

I give Boon Burger a lot of credit for being friendly and accommodating, and I'm sure plenty of people like it, especially loaded with their sauces. But stripped down to a Gold Medal Burger, it's healthy, grainy and mushy. It's a 2.7, the lowest score on my quest. The search for the best burger in Hamilton continues.
