Fiddlers Pour House on St. Paul Street in St. Catharines set a record on my Gold Medal Burger quest, and not a good one. The burger took 36 minutes to arrive, the longest wait yet, and it scored a 3.6, placing it #138 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Waiting, waiting

Usually Robyn calls in the order when we're about ten minutes away. This time we walked up St. Paul Street, just up the road from oddbird, and ordered when we got there. Then we waited. I nearly fell asleep at the bar. Maybe they had to go out back and get the cow? The price was $14.69.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, my international standard for burger testing. What came out was a double patty on a toasted bun with sliced red onion, some fancy lettuce and a pickle spear on the side. They definitely weren't back there slicing pickles during those 36 minutes. The bun looked good. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

First bite

The burger was hot. It wasn't sitting around under a lamp, and that counts for something. After that long a wait, I was half hoping it wouldn't be good, but it wasn't bad. There was a flavour in the patty I'm not used to, though, and I couldn't place it. Maybe a little cheese or sauce on there? It reminded me of an unusual patty I'd had earlier on the quest, almost like a wonton filling. It tasted fresh. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Robyn also gave a shout-out to Hometown, our favourite local ice cream spot nearby, during the visit.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted, and it looked good.
  • Patty: A hot, fresh-tasting double patty with an unusual flavour.
  • Toppings: Sliced red onion, fancy lettuce and a pickle spear on the side.
  • Wait: 36 minutes, the longest of the quest.
  • Value: $14.69.

My verdict

36 minutes, 3.6. A burger with no sides taking that long is unacceptable. Would it have scored better if it came out faster? I think so, but we'll never know, and the patty still isn't my style. Someone else might love that kind of burger. For me, Fiddlers Pour House lands near the bottom of the list.
