Belmont Hotel Burger Review – Port Colborne, ON
The Belmont Hotel is one of my most visited bars in all of Port Colborne. Back in the day it was the place to be during Canal Days, with karaoke and a poker night once a week. It's been renovated and looks beautiful now. But the burger scores a 5.7, good for #120 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
Our order
Robyn called in a Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, with no talk of fries. When she asked how long it would be, she was told 40 minutes, then 30. So I snuck off and did another review in between. When we came back, about 34 minutes later, the burger was waiting, along with fries. It cost $10.74.
A first look
A toasted brioche bun that looked buttered up, lettuce, a full ring of white onion and horizontal ruffle-cut pickles that might have been sweet. I liked how the onion went all the way across the burger.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. It was warm, though it seemed like it had been sitting a little. I wasn't convinced the patty was homemade. It might have been pressed in a machine, and my guess is the kitchen batch makes their patties and maybe freezes them. I considered whether the unordered fries were a DQ, tried one to help me decide, and let it go.
- Bun: Buttered, toasted brioche, and probably my favourite part.
- Patty: Possibly homemade, possibly pressed and frozen. Not much of a standout.
- Toppings: White onion across the whole burger and ruffle-cut pickles.
- Wait: 30 to 40 minutes for a burger is a long time.
- Value: $10.74 with fries thrown in.
My verdict
A 5.7, and I'm a little disappointed, because I love the Belmont. People tell me the burger is good, and I've always enjoyed their pizza and wings. I also recommend the Turbos, an amazing drink. Maybe it was an off day, maybe the long wait hurt it. Either way, I'd point you toward the pizza, the wings and a Turbo before the burger.
