Still on Brant Street in Burlington, I stopped at Wendel Clark's Classic Grill & Bar, a slightly classy sports pub named after one of my favourite hockey players. The Gold Medal Burger beat my expectations and scored a 7.3, #73 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

Inside, I saw people eating burgers held together with sticks, and the fish and chips looked really good. A guy noticed my burger shirt, and when I asked him how the burger was, he said it was the best. My answer: you don't need to oversell it, let's see.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $11.24, a good price in a big city. It came in a brown box with a toasted bun, one healthy slice of lettuce, some red onion, vertically sliced pickles and the patty. I didn't see juices everywhere, but I reserved judgment.

Before the first bite, I had to pay tribute to Wendel Clark: one of the best wrist shots I've ever seen.

First bite

It was better than I expected. I'll admit we'd been judging a book by its cover. It's not the best burger in the world, but it's a good sized patty. My guess is they make the patties in house in batches, and while it was a little overcooked, it was still good for how cooked it was, with some burger juice in there. The onion was a little pungent and cleared the nostrils, and the pickles were pretty good.

Bun, patty and toppings

  • Bun: A plain Jane bun. Not bad, but not as good as the one up the street.
  • Patty: Good size, a bit overcooked but still with some juice.
  • Toppings: Punchy red onion, a single slice of lettuce and good vertical pickles.
  • Value: $11.24, a fair price.

For me, the name carries some weight. Wendel Clark was one of my favourite players back in the 1990s, and I still talk about that wrap-around and the wrist shot. The burger didn't quite live up to the hockey, but it held its own.

My verdict

A good burger at 7.3. I was impressed with Burlington overall. It's stepping up its game compared to Hamilton, where nothing really stood out. Wendel Clark's is a place I'd come back to anytime.
