The Rib Crib and Smokeshop on Lakeport Road in St. Catharines is a barbecue spot first, and inside I saw tables full of people digging into it. I came for the Gold Medal Burger, and it scores a 6.3, good for #105 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only. The bill was $16.08, which made me wonder if this was going to be a really big burger. When I tore open the bag, I found out why: there were fries and coleslaw in there too. Robyn reminded me that I forgot to say "no sides." When she orders, she tells them straight up. She was happy about the fries, at least, and I was glad to see napkins in the bag.

A look inside

The burger had red onion, horizontally sliced pickles, lettuce and what looked like a homemade patty. One bite in, I had a different name for it: a meatloaf burger.

First bite

It was hot and tasty, but it was soft and dense in that meatloaf way, with a lot going on in the mix. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad burger. I've had way worse. A meatloaf burger just isn't my thing. I like straight beef. I did wonder for a second if the extra sides could count as a DQ, but no. It's still a Gold Medal Burger, it just brought company.

  • Bun: A soft bun that held up fine.
  • Patty: Homemade and flavourful, but with a meatloaf texture rather than a pure beef bite.
  • Toppings: Red onion, horizontal pickles and lettuce, as ordered.
  • Sides: Fries Robyn loved and a creamy coleslaw. I prefer vinegar-based slaw, but I still like it.
  • Value: $16.08 is high for the quest, though you are getting a full plate.

Robyn scores the fries

Robyn took the fries and gave them a 7.9. I agree they were exactly what fries should be: nicely seasoned and what you expect next to a burger.

My verdict

A 6.3 for the burger. If you love meatloaf burgers, this is your place. For me, the Rib Crib is a place to come back to for the barbecue. Next time I want to try their smoked prime rib.
