Taps Brewhouse Burger Review – Niagara Falls, ON
Taps Brewhouse on Queen Street in Niagara Falls, Ontario is a craft brewery with a cool vibe and friendly people inside. The kitchen manager recognized me right away and made a bold claim: best burger in Niagara Falls. Big talk. The burger came close to backing it up, scoring an 8.2, #45 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
I ordered my standard Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $15.82. It came with plenty of serviettes and a wooden fork. While I was inside, I also spotted the specials board advertising 35 cent wings with the purchase of a beverage, and trust me, I'm not forgetting that.
The great pickle hunt
I opened the burger and couldn't find the pickle. For a second, Robyn and I thought this might be a DQ. Then the pickle turned up, tucked away under the paper: pickle spears on the side, build your own style. I'm not a fan of spears, but the pickle was there, so Taps passed. Not a DQ. There was also a little ketchup at the back, but it wasn't on the patty, so I just picked it off.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. This is a homemade patty, and you can tell. It tasted like growing up in Wainfleet on the farm on a summer night, like my mama's burgers. There's clearly more than just beef in there. The kitchen wouldn't share the recipe, but I could taste some underlying ingredients giving it extra depth.
It was falling apart a bit, but it was full of flavour, and I couldn't remember having a better burger in the Falls.
What stood out to me
- Patty: Homemade, seasoned with a secret mix, and packed with flavour.
- Toppings: Lettuce and onion on the burger, pickle spears on the side. The spears cost it.
- Build: A big burger that came apart as I ate it.
- Value: $15.82, in line with sit-down pub prices.
My verdict
If not for the pickle spears, this burger would have been even higher in the eights. It still lands at a very good 8.2. Slice those pickles and put them on the burger, and Taps might have a real case for that claim. I'm already planning a return trip for the beer and that 35 cent wing night, because if the burger is this good, the rest of the menu deserves a look too.
