1st RND Burger Review – Edmonton, AB
The Gold Medal Burger quest went west. I flew out to Edmonton with my brother, and we found our burger at 1st RND inside West Edmonton Mall, the biggest mall in Canada. It was unlike anything else on the quest, and it scores a 7.9, #56 out of 140 on my rankings.
My order
The top burger on the menu was something I had never seen before: a donut burger. It normally comes with bacon, so we had to customize it into a Gold Medal Burger with lettuce, onion and pickle, each topping added as an extra. The total came to $23.00, which felt like Niagara-on-the-Lake prices. They had a loud soundtrack rocking in the background, too.
Double donut
I opened it up and found a patty, vertically sliced red onion, lettuce and pickle, with a donut on top and another donut on the bottom. Here I was thinking about switching to lettuce wraps for my health, and instead I went the complete opposite way.
First bite
The donuts were really good, better than I expected. I hadn't had a donut in months, and they were the star of the show. The burger itself is a backyard style patty. Staff told me they smash it.
How it stacked up
- Bun: Two donuts. My favourite part of the burger.
- Patty: The beef tasted good, but it was a little overcooked.
- Toppings: Ringed red onion, lettuce and standard pickles.
- Value: $23.00 is steep, with each topping charged as an extra.
West coast beef
I had heard the beef out west is better, and the patty did taste good. It was just a bit overcooked, and on its own it wouldn't stand out. The donuts are what lift it up.
My verdict
A 7.9 for one of the strangest Gold Medal Burgers on my quest. The patty is okay, the donuts bring it up, and the whole experience is pure fun. My brother passed on an on-camera bite but agreed off camera that it was pretty good. If you're at West Edmonton Mall and want something different, 1st RND delivers.
