On the biggest detour of my Gold Medal Burger quest, I found myself in Alberta at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, the best hotel I've ever seen. With my friend Mo behind the camera and the lake right behind me, the burger scores a 6.6, landing at #101 out of 140 on my rankings.

The setting

We were sitting on the patio, a spot that (between us) is meant for hotel guests, taking in some of the most beautiful views I've seen in my life. Everybody else ordered burgers loaded with bacon, cheese and special sauce. I ordered a lobster roll with a house salad, which was delish, and then a Gold Medal Burger for the review.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, with fries on the side. We charged it to the room, so I wasn't sure of the exact price on camera and guessed around $23. My scoresheet has it at $26.25. The server was really nice and customized the burger with no trouble.

What was on it

Lettuce, vertically sliced pickles, a patty I'd put at six ounces, maybe seven, and dusted onions. When the group ordered, the kitchen said burgers could only be cooked well done, and mine came out more cooked than the others.

First bite at Lake Louise

The flavour was good, just not as good as the view. The pickles were the star. My guess is homemade, they were very nice, and they were my favourite part of the burger. The onions were nice too. But the patty was overcooked, a challenge I see a lot on the quest, and the bun was light on the toast. A single leaf of lettuce was fine with me, though I wouldn't have minded a little more.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Light on the toast.
  • Patty: Around six or seven ounces with good flavour, but cooked well done.
  • Toppings: Excellent pickles, nice dusted onions and one leaf of lettuce.
  • Value: $26.25 with a side, the price of a hotel with this view.

My verdict

The burger is okay. The view is breathtaking. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise earns a 6.6, and my advice is to come for the scenery and maybe the lobster roll. We also tried the duck wings with blue cheese, which were not too bad. Later on the trip, in Banff, even a backyard patty at Eddie Burger Bar beat this one.
