The Gold Medal Burger quest took me all the way to the Rockies, and in Banff I stopped at Eddie Burger Bar on Banff Avenue. I didn't have high hopes going in, but I walked away impressed. Eddie scores a 7.1, good for #87 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

A guest behind the camera

Robyn wasn't filming this one. Instead, my old Brock University buddy Greg Prince took over the camera. We met at Brock and were roommates back in the day, and now we've reunited in Banff for a burger review.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. Nothing is cheap in Banff, and this one came to $19.43, though it wasn't the most expensive burger of the trip. The container made a good first impression: customized with my name written right on it, and it kept the burger warm.

Inside was a nicely toasted bun, lettuce, ruffled horizontally sliced pickles, and raw diced onion on the bottom. One look at the patty and I called it: backyard burger.

One bite in Banff

For a backyard patty, it was not bad at all. It was cooked properly, and the bun to burger ratio was money. I'll go so far as to say it was better than the burger I had at the Fairmont in Lake Louise, and that one was homemade. Once I finally hit a pickle, it was a good bite, and the pickle held up its end.

Greg mentioned that Eddie used to make its own patties, and I wondered if they're getting them made somewhere else now, because this was a good one. Some good Alberta beef.

Guest score

Greg took a bite and floated around a few numbers before landing on a 6.5. A rookie score, but not a bad one, right in the middle of the range.

Breaking it down

  • Bun: Toasted nicely, with a great ratio to the patty.
  • Patty: Backyard style, but cooked right.
  • Toppings: Ruffled horizontal pickles, lettuce and raw diced onion.
  • Value: $19.43, typical of Banff prices.

My verdict

I'll admit I was still shaking off some rust, having jumped back into the quest after six months off. Even so, it's been a long time since I've had a backyard burger this good. Eddie Burger Bar earns a 7.1, better than I thought. Next up on the Alberta swing: Salt Lick.
