I took the Gold Medal Burger quest all the way out to the Rockies for this one, and it came with a first: a double guest review. At Jasper Pizza Place in Jasper, Alberta, I had my brother on the camera and two friends at the table, and the burger came in at a 7.3, #74 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only. The burger was $12.79 before tax. I gave it a careful look to make sure there was no DQ, and it passed. It was a homemade smash patty with lettuce and pickles, and the onions were grilled right on top. A little light on the onion, but I liked the small, pocket burger size.

First bites all around

I gave my guests the honours of the first bite before taking my own. One bite, everybody knows the rules. We agreed pretty quickly: the burger was seasoned well and had good flavour, but it was a touch overcooked. One of the guys found the grilled onions a little burnt, which gave the burger a slightly burnt taste.

The bun split the table. One guest wasn't a fan, but I liked it. I think it's a potato bun, and it suits a pocket burger. The ruffled pickles were good too, probably store bought but tasty.

The scorecards

  • Guest one: 7.0, which I still call a rookie score.
  • Guest two: 6.5, mostly because it was a little dry.
  • My brother: 8.0, after a bite from the burger with more onions.
  • Me: 7.3, the official score.

Bun, patty and toppings

  • Bun: Possibly a potato bun. I liked it, not everyone did.
  • Patty: Homemade smash patty, well seasoned, slightly overcooked.
  • Toppings: Grilled onions (I wanted more), lettuce and ruffled pickles.
  • Value: $12.79.

My verdict

The meat was good and the flavour was there, but slightly overcooked kept it at 7.3. The pizza, though, is another story. We'd been there a few days earlier and loved the pizza, with the convection oven pie edging out the wood oven one. Add a beautiful patio with mountain views and amazing staff, and you can't come to Jasper without stopping in. The burger is good. The pizza is even better.
