Handlebar Hanks Burger Review – Welland, ON
This is where it all started. Handlebar Hanks in Welland, near Prince Charles Drive, was the very first stop on my Gold Medal Burger quest. I love the place for chicken wings, but the burger scored a 4.6, which places it #133 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My first Gold Medal Burger
The rules were set right here: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, and one bite to judge it. The burger cost $10.34. It was served open-faced, so at first I wasn't even sure I was holding it the right way up. There were a bunch of pickles, some iceberg lettuce and just a touch of red onion.
First bite
I put the burger together and took the first bite in Gold Medal Burger history. The patty was thick, but not very juicy. It was seasoned well but a little overcooked, with some char on it, and it came out warm rather than hot. I didn't hit any onion on that first bite. The bun, on the other hand, was really nice, and the lettuce had good crunch.
The breakdown
- Bun: Really nice, the best part of the burger.
- Patty: Thick and well seasoned, but dry and a little overcooked.
- Lettuce: Iceberg with good crunch.
- Onion: Just a touch of red onion.
- Pickles: Plenty of them.
- Value: $10.34.
My verdict
I've got to be honest, this is exactly what I was worried about heading into the quest: going to a place I love and not running into a great burger. Good bun, crunchy lettuce, but the patty wasn't the greatest. It's a 4.6, and there are much better burgers out there. My advice is simple: at Handlebar Hanks, get the wings, not the burger.
