Chuck Burger Burger Review – Blue Mountains, ON
On a trip up to Blue Mountain, I went looking for a burger and found exactly one restaurant in the village with "burger" in its name. So Chuck Burger it was. It scores a 6.4, good for #102 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
A Gold Medal Burger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The receipt showed a cheeseburger with the cheese, tomato and Chuck sauce all removed, for $12.40. I thought that was fair, and a lot better than some of the prices I saw on a recent trip out to Alberta. And the view from the village didn't hurt either. Beautiful.
A pocket burger
I wasn't sure what to call this bun. It was joined at the back like a little pocket, soft enough that it felt steamed, and it reminded me of a Wendy's burger. Inside was a double patty, lettuce, vertically sliced pickles and onion diced up on the bottom. My first concern was the onion. There wasn't much of it, and I already knew who was going to be crying about that in the comments.
First bite
One bite in, my reaction was that it's not a bad burger at all. It may look like Wendy's, but it doesn't taste like Wendy's. I was also relieved there was no cheese on it, since I got a little worried for a second when I saw the receipt.
I don't think the patties are made in house. To me they looked like pre-made "backyard" patties mashed onto the grill, and the whole thing felt like a chain burger rather than a one-off. Backyard or not, it's done pretty well.
The breakdown
- Bun: Soft, steamed-feeling pocket bun, toasted and folded over.
- Patty: A double. Decent, but it needs a little more seasoning.
- Onion: Good, but light. This is the one thing holding it back.
- Pickle: Nice once I finally reached it.
- Value: $12.40 sits right in the middle of the quest's range, which is reasonable for a resort village with this view.
My verdict
A solid 6.4. If they had kicked up the onions, I could have bumped it up a couple of fractions of a point, because it's not a bad burger at all. If you're walking through the village on a chilly day and want something warm, grab yourself one of these little pocket burgers. It's not going to challenge the top of my list, but it does the job.
