Fresh back from Alberta and on the way to Blue Mountain, Robyn and I made an impromptu double stop on Highway 89 near Shelburne. After reviewing Superburger, we walked across the road to Champ Burger. It scores a 6.1, good for #110 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only. The staff asked whether I wanted a four ounce or a six ounce patty. I asked which was better, was told both are popular but the six ounce a little more so, and went with six. My scoresheet has it at $8.76. Champ Burger also has a drive-thru and serves alcohol, which the place across the street did not.

A first look

Right away, the bun looked better than the one across the street. It was toasted, with horizontally sliced pickles, shredded lettuce and onion diced up very fine. The patty was a healthy size, though it didn't quite feel like six ounces, and it was 100% a backyard patty. Robyn thought it almost looked like a turkey burger.

First bite

It tasted more processed than Superburger's patty, but it was also juicier, so juicy I wondered if it was cooked sous vide or boiled. It reminded me of another very juicy patty I had earlier on the quest. The flavour was really nice and almost a little sweet. I couldn't figure out where the sweet was coming from, but I liked it.

  • Bun: Toasted, and the better bun of the two stops.
  • Patty: Six ounces, processed but juicy and flavourful.
  • Toppings: Shredded lettuce, finely diced onion, horizontal pickles.
  • Ratio: Leans more toward the burger side.
  • Value: Under nine dollars for a six ounce burger.

Champ vs. Super

I had a dilemma. Both were backyard burgers, but this one was way more processed. The patty across the street felt fresher and more charred, while this one was juicier with more flavour. In the end, it comes down to which style you like better.

My verdict

A 6.1 for Champ Burger, close behind its neighbour. A juicy, slightly sweet backyard burger on a good bun. Then it was back in the car and on to Blue Mountain to hunt for more burgers.
