Back from Alberta and celebrating our second anniversary, Robyn and I were driving up to Blue Mountain when we spotted two burger places facing each other on Highway 89. There was no way we were driving past both. First up was Superburger, which scores a 5.9, good for #114 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Where exactly are we?

Nobody was quite sure. The gentleman inside said we were in Mono, Dufferin County. The address is Highway 89 in Mulmur, and my scoresheet files it under Shelburne. Wherever it is, the place was super friendly with a small town feel, and it looked new or recently updated.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only: $6.75 plus tax, or $7.62. Robyn's small black coffee was $1.75.

A first look

Diced onions, vertically sliced pickles and shredded lettuce on a burger that looked really good and juicy. My first impression was that the patty might be homemade, though part of it had broken off and been shoved back in. I'm cool with that.

First bite

It was hot and good, and I liked the char. Even if it was cooked on a flat top, it almost tasted barbecued, and you could see char on it. I don't think they made this patty today. My guess is a frozen backyard patty from a chain.

  • Bun: Bun to burger ratio on point.
  • Patty: Backyard, but nicely charred and decently seasoned. A little more salt would help.
  • Juiciness: Not dripping, but not dry either.
  • Toppings: Diced onion, vertical pickles, shredded lettuce.
  • Value: Under eight dollars. A good price.

The backyard ceiling

Here's a new rule that came out of a conversation in Alberta: backyard burgers cap at a 7. A backyard burger that gets a 7 is basically perfect. By that standard, a 5.9 is actually pretty good. Robyn looked shocked at how low it sounded, but I'm standing by it: the patty is pretty good for a backyard, and I like the ratios.

My verdict

A 5.9 for Superburger, a pretty decent backyard burger at a very good price. And because Robyn mentioned Champ Burger on camera, we had no choice. Next stop was right across the street to see who has the better burger on Highway 89.
