My Gold Medal Burger quest is worldwide, and this stop took Robyn and me north to Collingwood and The Huron Club. We walked in right at opening as the first customers of the day. The burger earns an 8.7, good for #18 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

My order

Ordering took a couple of tries. The server asked if I wanted cheese and bacon. I said no, and she hurried to the back to make sure the kitchen got it right. When she brought it out, she told me it comes with fries. I hadn't ordered any, but fries came anyway, along with aioli on the side, and Robyn was happy about that. The total was $21.47.

What's in the box

The box was heavy. Under the fries, I found a toasted bun, lettuce, ruffled pickles sliced horizontally and a surprise: a double patty, with caramelized onions tucked between the patties. No onion shortage up here. The server said it was a homemade, juicy burger, and it looked the part. It was a two hander.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. The juices were flowing, and that's always a good sign. The first thing I noticed was the pickles. They tasted homemade, which earns props, but they were a touch too sweet.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted and holding up to a lot of beef.
  • Patty: A juicy homemade double patty. Lots of beef, maybe a little heavy, but in the right direction for ratios.
  • Onions: Caramelized and generous, and I liked them.
  • Pickles: Homemade but too sweet. My advice: use a dill pickle, or go lighter on the sugar.
  • Value: $21.47 isn't cheap, but it includes fries and a lot of beef.

About the price

I know some of you will say $22 for a burger is insane. It's not cheap, but I've been seeing a lot of expensive burgers lately, and this one is a good one. Robyn, meanwhile, said the fries were really good.

My verdict

I didn't know what to expect in Collingwood, and I left impressed. A juicy double patty, good caramelized onions and a solid bun to beef ratio earn The Huron Club an 8.7. Fix the pickles and this burger has room to climb.
