Robyn and I were in Hamilton for a family sip and see, and there was no way we were leaving without trying a burger. We hit the googles, burgers near me, and it led us to Curbside Grill on Ottawa Street. It scores a 7.9, #55 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger quest.

My order

The guy inside was having computer problems, but that didn't slow down the burger. I paid $14.95 for my Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, and the man running the place seemed to recognize me on the way out. I was relieved the order came out right.

A good looker

Grill marks on what looked like a homemade patty, vertically sliced pickles, thinly sliced onions and diced romaine lettuce on a toasted bun. I liked the looks of this one from the start.

First bite

A nice thick patty, grilled up. This is a pocket burger, and I love the size. You could easily put away a couple of these. It definitely felt like a homemade burger to me, and the bun tasted fresh.

  • Bun: Toasted and fresh tasting.
  • Patty: Thick, homemade and grilled, with good flavour, but moist rather than juicy.
  • Toppings: I liked the way they did the onions. The lettuce was a little messy, but still good.
  • Value: $14.95 for a solid homemade burger.

One minute too long

My one critique: the patty could have used one minute less on the grill. That extra minute took it from juicy to just moist. On a different day, I think it could score higher.

Sam the fish

The spot is small, and there's a good sized fish named Sam swimming around inside. I even grabbed some footage of him. Robyn skipped her bite this time. She had just gotten braces.

It was Halloween season on Ottawa Street, too, with trick-or-treaters out while I ate. A small, friendly spot, a guy behind the counter who stayed easygoing through his computer trouble, and a burger built the way I like them.

My verdict

A 7.9 for a good, solid burger. Fresh bun, nice thick patty, and a size that makes you want a second one. If you're on Ottawa Street, this little bad boy is worth a stop.
