Mommaz Boyz Burger Review – Welland, ON
It had been a hot minute since Robyn and I were last at Mommaz Boyz on First Avenue in Welland, the spot whose sign calls it the home of the best steak sub. This time I was there for a Gold Medal Burger, and the brothers didn't know I was coming. They put on a good show anyway. I called it an 8.4 on camera.
My order
Same as always: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, no side. They told me they don't often get a burger order without a side, so they had to figure out the price. It came to about $11. I asked about the patty, and it's a homemade 8 oz Angus burger.
The packaging was a clear container, so I could see the burger before I even popped the top.
First bite
This burger is not small. I remembered from a past Must See Monday that getting a bite of food here is not easy. One bite, everybody knows the rules, and the first thing that hit me was the onion, then the patty. I could tell right away it was homemade. It didn't give me that backyard frozen feeling at all. It tasted like they had just made it, not like it was made last week and left sitting around.
- Patty: An 8 oz homemade Angus patty, half a pound before cooking. Legit.
- Seasoning: Salt and pepper, and seasoned well.
- Toppings: Red onions, pickles and shredded lettuce. Pickles aren't my fave, but they went really well with the beef.
- Size: A little too big for me, but plenty of food.
- Value: About $11 for this much burger and this quality.
Simple wins
I had a loaded specialty burger at Mommaz Boyz before, and it was delicious, but I like this toned-down version. The homemade beef gets to do the talking. I saved some for Robyn too.
My verdict
I had been putting off this visit because I see these guys around town and they kept asking when the burger review was coming. I came in unannounced, and Mommaz Boyz delivered. My on-camera score was 8.4, a good burger for the money. If you're at Niagara College and feel like a burger, it's about 800 steps to the corner of Woodlawn and First. Walk there, eat, walk back, and you've burned it off.
