The Big Sizzle Burger Review – Niagara Falls, ON
The Big Sizzle is a burgers, fries and shakes spot in the heart of tourist Niagara Falls, right across from the Embassy Suites, and it was packed and windy the day Robyn and I showed up. Robyn actually used to work at the hotel next door. The burger gave me a pleasant surprise on price and taste, scoring an 8.2, good for #39 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
The Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, came to $7.06. I couldn't believe it. This is the main artery of the honeymoon capital of the world, a stone's throw from the water, the casino and the Skylon, and I expected to pay a lot more. It came hot, wrapped in a paper bag with napkins.
A look inside
A sesame seed bun that didn't look toasted, what looked like a homemade patty, nice horizontal ruffle-cut pickles, onions and chopped lettuce. The further I get into this quest, the more I'm developing the palate, and my guess was that this patty came off a flat top.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. Not a bad start. I picked up bread and butter pickles right away, which gave the burger a sweet note. A gentleman kept walking back and forth while we were filming, so I offered him a bite. He passed.
Bun, patty, pickles and price
- Bun: Sesame seed, not toasted.
- Patty: Looked homemade and cooked on a flat top.
- Toppings: Sweet bread and butter pickles, onion and chopped lettuce.
- Value: $7.06 for a good burger in the most touristy part of town. Hard to beat.
Location, location
The setting is a big part of the appeal. The Big Sizzle is right in the middle of the action, with the Embassy Suites towering overhead, the casino next door and the Skylon in view. On a busy, blustery day the patio was packed, and Robyn and I had to dodge the wind just to find a spot to film. In a part of town where a meal can get pricey fast, a good seven dollar burger stands out.
My verdict
I went back and forth between an 8.1 and an 8.2 on camera, but the official score is 8.2. Good price, good burger, and in a part of town where I expected an expensive meal, this one wasn't. If you're down by the Falls and looking for an affordable burger, The Big Sizzle is your spot.
